Fear-filled pup found cowering by highway barrier during rainstorm, saved and given home by driver who taught the stray dog how to play and enjoy life with her new canine siblings, dog mom says: ‘I’m truly the lucky one.’

Highway dog dumpings are becoming quite the common occurrence along the interstates of the world. Chosen for their distance from civilization and in the hopes of avoiding penalties for animal negligence, these puppers are left to rot or get hit by a car. That is unless someone has the heart and the courage to stop and save a dog who has been dumped like this, just as the rescuer in this story did, in the middle of a massive rainstorm.

While the actual rescue in this story is wonderfully dramatic and dangerous there is a lot to be said that the true story of this pup only begins when she gets home from said rescue. This is when her recovery and socialization began. She was not well when she arrived home and was of course given the veterinary care she needed, but what was most surprising about this doggo was that she had never learned to play. Not with hoomans or other dogs.

This was a pup who had spent her life either working or being pumped full of babies and had not had a moment of unfettered pupper joy in her whole life. She had only the interests of her master on her mind and when her new dog momma finally gave her the opportunity to let loose and have fun playing, the pupper had no idea what to do. And so began their heartwarming journey, learning to play, learning to love and learning to be a dog who has agency over her life.

Goodness, this poor pupper must have spent her life working or being used to make more puppers and even after giving all she had to the hooman who made her labor, it was not enough. She found herself dumped on a highway with no idea what to do with herself. But thanks to this heroic hooman all that is in the past now. The courage that it takes to approach a terrified pupper in the middle of a rainstorm on a highway is unparalleled. We’d hardly expect to see Batman nor Spiderman attempt a rescue like that.

It truly melts our minds trying to comprehend a life for a dog that does not even involve tail wagging. A life so sad, so simple and devoid of joy that a pupper has no reason to actually wag their tail. And sadly this lovely lady is not the only one who has lived a life like this. In fact many doggos who are born into lives like these do not make it out of them. So we have the universal forces that be to thank for directing things in such a way that this sweet girl would be spared from that life. Even if it meant spending a few scary and soaking hours on that highway.
